The ‘Hogueras de San Juan’ of Alicante, a vibrant celebration marking the arrival of summer, takes place this year from the 16th to the 24th of June. These festivities are the highlight of the province’s cultural calendar and have been recognised as an International Tourist Attraction since 1983 and a Cultural Interest Event since 2014.
The ‘Hogueras’ tradition stems from the longest day of the year, a time when farmers would harvest their crops and celebrate the shortest night around bonfires. Thanks to José María Py, these celebrations were officially recognised as a festival in 1928, transforming them into a major tourist attraction and following in the footsteps of Valencia and its renowned ‘Fallas’.
