Hogueras 2026 Breaks Boundaries: Alicante Welcomes Bullfighting Fans from 53 Countries

The Hogueras Bullfighting Fair has reinforced its international appeal after attracting more than 62,000 spectators from 53 countries and 45 Spanish provinces, setting a new attendance record.

The Hogueras Fair Strengthens Its Position as One of Spain’s Leading Summer Bullfighting Events

The 2026 Hogueras Bullfighting Fair has once again confirmed Alicante’s privileged place on Spain’s bullfighting calendar. After nine consecutive days of events, the festival concluded with outstanding figures that highlight both its sporting appeal and its growing ability to attract visitors from across Spain and around the world.

More than 62,000 spectators attended the Alicante Bullring throughout the fair, further establishing the season ticket package as one of the province’s most important cultural events. One of this year’s most remarkable achievements was the diversity of its audience, with ticket buyers coming from 53 different countries and 45 Spanish provinces.

An Increasingly International Fair

The international profile of the Hogueras Fair continues to grow year after year. France topped the list of overseas visitors, followed by the United Kingdom, Italy, Poland, the United States, Germany and Hungary, reflecting the increasing international interest in Alicante’s summer bullfighting festival.

The list of nationalities also highlights the truly global reach of the event. Spectators travelled from countries as diverse as Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon and China, alongside visitors from across the Americas, including Canada, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Uruguay, Panama and Bolivia.

Bullfighting Draws Visitors from Across Spain

Spanish spectators also turned out in impressive numbers. Ticket buyers travelled from 45 of Spain’s 50 provinces, with Madrid, Valencia, Murcia, Seville and Albacete among the regions with the highest attendance.

These figures underline the importance of the Hogueras Fair within the Spanish bullfighting calendar, making it an essential event both for dedicated aficionados and for visitors looking to combine their summer holiday with one of Spain’s most celebrated cultural traditions.

An Outstanding Artistic Balance

The success of the fair was measured not only by attendance but also by the quality of the performances in the arena.

A total of 19 performers, including matadors, novilleros (bullfighters who fight young bulls) and rejoneadores (horseback bullfighters), earned the honour of leaving through the Puerta Grande (the Bullring’s Great Gate), which was opened after every performance during the fair.

In total, 51 ears were awarded, reflecting the consistently high standard of the bullfights throughout the festival.

From a livestock perspective, not a single bull was returned to the pens, demonstrating the excellent presentation and condition of the fighting bulls. Among the most highly praised were the bullfights featuring bulls from Santiago Domecq and Victorino Martín, together with the novillada promoted by Talavante, which received widespread acclaim from both spectators and professionals.

Alicante Reinforces a Winning Formula

The 2026 edition confirms that the Hogueras Bullfighting Fair has become much more than a major bullfighting event. Today, it is also an important cultural, economic and tourism driver for the city of Alicante.

The combination of leading matadors, prestigious breeding ranches, enthusiastic public support and an increasingly international audience has firmly established the Plaza de Toros de Alicante among the most important venues of the Spanish bullfighting season.

With thousands of visitors arriving from all over Spain and more than fifty countries worldwide, the Hogueras Fair once again demonstrates that bullfighting remains one of Spain’s most distinctive cultural traditions, attracting enthusiasts from across the globe while showcasing Alicante as one of the country’s premier bullfighting destinations.
