Review Bullfighting Alicante – 24 June 2026
Two Triumphant Exits and an Exceptional Victorino Martín Bullfight in Alicante
The Hogueras Fair in Alicante brought its programme of bullfights to a memorable close with an afternoon of outstanding performances. El Cid and Manuel Escribano shared a triumphant exit on the shoulders of supporters after delivering two impressive performances against the Victorino Martín bulls, which proved to be the undisputed stars of the event. José María Manzanares also found success, although his sword work prevented him from earning further trophies.
The sixth event in the season-ticket programme featured six impeccably presented bulls with varied characteristics but one quality in common: bravery. Each presented different challenges and opportunities, testing the skills and adaptability of all three matadors.
The third bull, named Matalunas, number 69, stood out for its exceptional quality and was awarded a lap of honour around the ring after its death. Its outstanding charge allowed Manuel Escribano to build an intense and compelling performance, although mistakes with the sword prevented him from receiving the trophies his work with the muleta might otherwise have earned.
With 7,947 spectators in the stands and an atmosphere well suited to a memorable afternoon, Alicante brought the fair to a close with a striking demonstration of the character and demands of the Victorino Martín bloodline.
El Cid Rediscovers His Best Form and Secures a Triumphant Exit
Manuel Jesús El Cid delivered a performance that recalled some of the finest afternoons of his career. The Sevillian matador found his greatest expression through the left-hand passes, demonstrating composure, experience and depth against two bulls with very different characteristics.
His first opponent allowed him to develop a performance of considerable substance, particularly through the naturales, the passes performed with the muleta in the left hand. However, his failure to finish effectively with the sword cost him any trophies, and the crowd acknowledged his work with applause after an official warning.
Everything changed with the fourth bull. El Cid once again demonstrated his ability to interpret the animal’s charge from the left, responding with determination and courage when the bull demanded greater commitment. His final effort, followed by an effective sword thrust, earned him both ears and secured his exit on the shoulders of supporters.
His accumulated experience and deep understanding of this type of bull proved decisive. The matador from Salteras once again demonstrated why he remains a significant figure in the bullfighting world.
Manzanares Makes the Most of the Second Bull but Misses Out on a Further Trophy with the Fifth
José María Manzanares produced several moments of quality and earned one ear from the second bull, an animal notable for its rhythm and willingness to lower its head as it followed the matador’s cloths.
The Alicante-born matador built a classically styled performance, relying mainly on passes with his right hand. He finished with an estocada recibiendo, a demanding sword technique in which the matador waits for the bull’s charge before executing the final thrust.
He continued to impress against the fifth bull, a spirited animal that demanded greater precision and commitment. Manzanares found his best rhythm when he lowered his hand and guided the bull’s charge with greater depth, particularly during the second half of the performance.
This time, however, his sword work let him down. Missed attempts prevented him from adding another trophy, and he eventually received applause after an official warning.
His final tally could have been higher, but his performances demonstrated that he, too, had been in contention for a triumphant exit.
Manuel Escribano Strengthens His Special Bond with Alicante
Manuel Escribano once again demonstrated his special connection with Alicante’s bullfighting fans. His afternoon featured two very different encounters, both of which demanded exceptional commitment and the ability to respond to the challenges posed by the Victorino Martín bulls.
Facing the third bull, Matalunas, the Sevillian matador delivered a varied performance using both hands. The animal responded with an extraordinary charge, and the connection between bull and matador grew throughout the faena. The enthusiasm in the stands became so strong that some spectators even called for the bull to be pardoned and spared.
That reward never materialised. Escribano failed to finish effectively with the sword and received applause after two official warnings. Nevertheless, his performance remained one of the afternoon’s highlights. The bull itself was awarded a lap of honour around the ring after its death in recognition of its exceptional qualities.
The sixth bull presented a much tougher challenge. Escribano received it with a portagayola, kneeling at the entrance to the arena to meet the charging animal in a particularly dangerous and spectacular opening move. He also excelled with the banderillas, the decorated barbed sticks placed in the bull’s shoulders during the middle stage of the fight.
With the muleta, he had to overcome the animal’s difficulties, standing his ground against challenging charges and constantly seeking ways to bring it under control. His determination was rewarded with two ears, securing his triumphant exit on the shoulders of supporters.
The matador from Gerena therefore concluded the afternoon with a display of total commitment, combining his skill with the banderillas and his courage against a demanding bull to earn the crowd’s admiration.
A Complete Bullfight Showcases the Distinctive Character of Victorino Martín
The Victorino Martín breeding ranch was the principal attraction of the fair’s final bullfight. All six bulls were presented to a high standard, and their varied behaviour offered a range of challenges, nuances and opportunities that sustained the interest throughout the afternoon.
The differences between the animals allowed the matadors to demonstrate their individual strengths. El Cid stood out for his understanding of the bloodline and his command of the natural pass; Manzanares displayed his classical style against bulls combining quality with demanding characteristics; and Escribano found in their bravery the opportunity to demonstrate his ability as a complete bullfighter.
The third bull, Matalunas, occupied a special place in the overall assessment of the breeding ranch. Its lap of honour recognised the exceptional quality of its charge, which enabled a performance of great merit and became one of the most talked-about moments of the afternoon.
Overall, the bullfight highlighted the importance of bravery and variety in bullfighting, with six distinct animals requiring the matadors to adapt their techniques and approach to each encounter.
Manzanares Receives the Award for the 2025 Fair's Triumphant Matador
The final event of the Hogueras Fair also provided an opportunity for an official presentation. Before the bullfight began, the Alicante Bullfighting Club presented José María Manzanares with the trophy recognising him as the outstanding matador of the 2025 fair.
The afternoon had opened with another notable moment: the Bellea del Foc, the leading figure of Alicante’s traditional Hogueras celebrations, arrived at the bullring by horse-drawn carriage accompanied by her Court of Honour to inaugurate the event.
With El Cid and Manuel Escribano leaving on the shoulders of supporters, Manzanares recognised for his achievements and the Victorino Martín bulls delivering an exceptional performance, Alicante brought its 2026 bullfighting programme to a close with an afternoon of considerable artistic and breeding quality.
