The 2026 Hogueras Fair began in Alicante with a superb atmosphere and plenty of optimism for the days ahead. The opening event of the season-ticket series produced an unforgettable image for the future of bullfighting, as all three novilleros on the bill left the arena through the Puerta Grande following an afternoon of impressive performances and an outstanding set of novillos from Talavante’s ranch.
The livestock bred by Extremaduran matador, Alejandro Talavante, proved to be the main highlight of the event. The novillos showed mobility, willingness and quality, providing excellent opportunities for the young bullfighters to shine. With the exception of the fourth animal, which was more demanding and less expressive, the rest of the run displayed bravery and class throughout. Special mention must be made of the third novillo, “Campiñoso”, whose exceptional performance prompted sections of the crowd to call for a pardon. Although the request was not granted, the animal was awarded a posthumous lap of honour in recognition of its remarkable qualities.
Mario Vilau opened the afternoon demonstrating the confidence and maturity that have characterised his recent performances. The young bullfighter displayed composure and good technique in both of his appearances, connecting strongly with the spectators through a polished and effective style. His consistency throughout the afternoon earned him one ear from each of his novillos, completing a highly accomplished performance.
Olga Casado afternoon gathered momentum as the event progressed. After receiving a warm ovation for her first effort, the Madrid-born novillera found in her second opponent the perfect opportunity to showcase her personality, determination and talent. Her work made a strong impression on the crowd and was rewarded with two ears, securing her place among the afternoon’s major triumphs.
Javier Cuartero meanwhile, enjoyed a particularly emotional day in front of his home supporters. The Alicante native had been honoured before the novillada as the best novillero of the 2025 Hogueras Fair and rose to the occasion with a committed and courageous display. His first novillo allowed him to produce the most memorable moments of his performance, earning him two ears after a warning. Despite his efforts with the sixth, he was unable to add further trophies to his tally.
The public response was another positive aspect of the day. Nearly half of the seats in Alicante’s bullring were occupied on a pleasant afternoon marked by the festive spirit of the Hogueras celebrations. Younger fans in particular enthusiastically celebrated a memorable opening event that concluded with all three novilleros being carried out on shoulders, accompanied by Talavante’s ranch foreman in a fitting image of the afternoon’s resounding success.
With a start of this calibre, the 2026 Hogueras Fair has set high expectations for the remaining events of Alicante’s bullfighting season.
