Alicante bullring hosts the V José María Manzanares Trophy featuring six novice bullfighters without picadors and calves from Hermanos Martí in an open public event.
The bullfighting season begins to take shape in Alicante with an event focused on the next generation of talent. The Plaza de España bullring will host the fifth edition of the José María Manzanares Trophy on 22 February, an initiative designed to showcase emerging young bullfighters.
Presented as a morning training bullfight, the event will start at 12:00 pm and will be open to the public with free admission. The City Council of Alicante, the Municipal Bullfighting School and Eventos Mare Nostrum are responsible for the organisation, continuing their commitment to supporting the grassroots of bullfighting.
For this occasion, calves from the Hermanos Martí ranch, based in Bocairent, will be fought. The Valencian breeders, steadily gaining recognition within the circuit, will make their debut in a second-category bullring, adding particular interest from a breeding perspective.
The line-up brings together six students from different bullfighting schools across Spain. Iker de Virgilio, representing Castellón, will share the arena with Alicante’s Cristóbal Granero and Rodrigo Villalón. They will be joined by Jorge Escamilla from Valencia, Remy Asensio from San Fernando and Pablo Méndez from Guadalajara, creating a varied and promising showcase of styles.
Beyond its educational purpose, the trophy pays tribute to José María Manzanares, one of the most influential figures in Alicante’s bullfighting history. Through this initiative, the bullring reinforces its role as a key venue for cultural promotion and for encouraging new generations aiming to build their careers in the arena.
The event also offers an opportunity to introduce bullfighting to new audiences, blending the educational atmosphere of training sessions with the excitement of live performance.
